im just curious to know , how many alphabets does the fijian language have?
Bula, Emilee. As far as I know, there is one alphabet that was introduced by some missionaries (I believe the Wesleyans, but I need to double-check this). They came up with interesting innovations, like using the letter "c" for a sound that we would writhe as "th" in English. In that way, they used a letter that had no function in the Fijian alphabet to avoid wasting ink in a digraph (the two letters "th"). They also came up with the sound correspondences for "q" and "g".
On the other hand, there are many dialects in Fijian, so words that have similar meanings may be written differently (or the same word in Standard Fijian may be pronounced differently) depending on the town, province, or island where you are. Is that what you had in mind? I will try to come up with more concrete illustrations. Vinaka!
