"And the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas by night unto Berea:who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."Acts 17:10-11
Berea is within Macedonia. This small Jewish community were of noble birth but they remained true to God's Word amidst a pagan culture.
Their lives and ways were continually on the things and ways of God.
The Old Testament was the only scripture available at that time and Paul with Silas preached to them about Jesus.
What is special with them?
Firstly they did not reject out of hand teachings by the apostles but they tested and examined these by searching the scripture to ascertain the truth in them.
They made sure that old ideas and beliefs are not disapproved so easily but at the same time their doors are open to any truth that might come to them through teaching or revelation. They studied the scripture to see that what they were taught is correct
They also were not hot tempered or ill conditioned towards all that were not of their mind.
They have a generous spirit, open minded and certainly not suspicious of others.
Now we have both the Old and New Testament to contend with and are supposed to do a lot more searching from the Scripture to test whether these truths and revelations be in line or is correct. Use the Bible to approve or disapprove
We need to use the Word of God and be reminded over and over that the Bible is true.
It is when we begin to know the Scripture well,we can then identity what is true and what is lie.
Only when we know can we be convicted and certainly comforted by God.
