In Genesis 17:12, God commanded Abraham to circumcise baby boys on the eighth day of their lives. Why day eight? Is there any good, scientific rationale behind such a command

In Genesis 17:12, God specifically directed Abraham to circumcise newborn males on the eighth day. Why the eighth day? In 1935, professor H. Dam proposed the name “vitamin K” for the factor in foods that helped prevent hemorrhaging in baby chicks. We now know vitamin K is responsible for the production (by the liver) of the element known as prothrombin.

If vitamin K is deficient, there will be a prothrombin deficiency and hemorrhaging may occur. Oddly, it is only on the fifth through the seventh days of the newborn male’s life that vitamin K (produced by bacteria in the intestinal tract) is present in adequate quantities.

Vitamin K, coupled with prothrombin, causes blood coagulation, which is important in any surgical procedure. Holt and McIntosh, in their classic work, Holt Pediatrics, observed that a newborn infant has “peculiar susceptibility to bleeding between the second and fifth days of life.... Hemorrhages at this time, though often inconsequential, are sometimes extensive; they may produce serious damage to internal organs, especially to the brain, and cause death from shock and exsanguination” (1953, pp. 125-126).

Obviously, then, if vitamin K is not produced in sufficient quantities until days five through seven, it would be wise to postpone any surgery until some time after that. But why did God specify day eight?

On the eighth day, the amount of prothrombin present actually is elevated above one-hundred percent of normal—and is the only day in the male’s life in which this will be the case under normal conditions. If surgery is to be performed, day eight is the perfect day to do it. Vitamin K and prothrombin levels are at their peak

siga cava na eighth day?

That's obvisiously from a scientific point of view that tries to explain why God probably commanded that circumcision be carried out. When God commanded either Abraham or Moses he did not give them such lengthy details into why the eigth day. That overflow of vitamin K and prothrombin is a recent discovery.According to scripture Abraham is known as the father of faith. He listen and did as he was told because he knew God knew what was best for him and his family. But to answer the question of why the eighth day..simply it is because God said it....HE said the world & all of mankind into existence..
Everything goes back to creation, even God doesn't explain why He created the world in 5 days the 6th he created man and the 7 he rested. In Genesis he only used 2 chapters to explain how we got here and never discus any more details of the creation. Also we must understand whether you believe the fact or not beliving the fact, it doesnt change the truth of the fact. 2+2=4 is the mathametical fact and if you believe it or not it never change the fact.
When you study the bible, you will discover that numbers has a deeper meanings and some do study them into greater details which everything in God has a bigger equation of life.
6 is the number of men and 7 is the number of completion or restoration. I will later confirm all these because there are many prophecies and blessings all tied in the numbering in the bible.
8 is the first day of life and the Jewish tradition this signifies the child can now live and the circumcision has to be done because it is the covenant between God and his people. Also on this day the baby is then given a name, the first seven days has no name until they enter into covenant. The mother too has too go through her purification after birth and these is another study by itself.
The important thing here is the fact that the Bible is not a scientific support Book..however its vise-verser!!! Had it been then what we Christian called Faith will be based on nothing but infinite beliefs!!!!!!!
Circumcision on the 8th day is interesting for several reasons. First, Jewish tradition believes that the first 7 days of an infant's life represent the finished creation of the physical world in seven days. The number 8 (representing a new begining) transcends the physical world and initiates the child into the Abrahamic covenant. Also, a newborn was to experience one Sabbath before being circumcised.
Medical research has discovered 2 unique blessings linked to circumcision. One is the blood clotting factor, Vitamin K, that contains prothrombin as discussed by "Truth Seeker"....making the 8th day the best time for circumcision. The other one is that (as reported by the the British Journal of Cancer) certain cancers of the cervix appear lower in Jewish women in Israel than among any other ethnic groups. Therefore, God knew the physical and medical significance for 8th day circumcision.
Thank you truth seeker, you just confirmed what I've read 14 years ago by S.I McMillen a jewish doctor and he wrote a book called 'None Of These Diseases' and he mentioned about what you've just wrote regarding why jewish boys were circumcised on the 8th day (that book is a must read). I believe Perry Stone just came out with a book 'Breaking the Jewish Code' and he also talked about it in his book. I believe every dos and don'ts in the bible has a significant meaning behind it. Dr McMillen went a bit further by saying why God told Moses that all Jewish men to be circumcised, which I always think in a theological term it has something to do with God's covenant with Abraham which is true but McMillen says that hygienically when a man's foreskin is removed from his penis the bacteria (forgot the name of that bacteria) that hibernate in that area (under the foreskin) cease to exist. That bacteria when transmitted from an un-circumcised man to a woman thru sexual intercourse it causes vaginal cancer in a woman over a period of time....Ra goneyalewa kakua na vaqarai iratou tiko na nodatou vasu baleta na 'globe ni cina' e se boko vinaka sara dua e tauvi koya na vaginal cancer. Sa dri yani!!!
Just a point of refrence to Gods covenant about circumcision, when Joseph was in Egypt and when his brother came to buy corn in Egypt they couldn't tell the difference about the Egyptian from their brother. He talked like them, smell like them and dress like them. If you read the scripture that he even asked all his brothers to come to his chamber and told all the Egyptian to go out except his family. The scripture said Joseph finally convince his brothers after he uncovered himself, meaning he finally show them his identity that he is circumcised just like them.
When Samuel the priest went to annoint David, he looked at all the brothers and none was qualified out of the seven and Samuel asked if there was another and they have to wait for the 8th to be annointed. The 8th day is the beging of the first day and the begining of a new life.
Eight people were saved in Noahs ark, so the whole world began from eight.
Nehem 8:18 is the day of solemn assembly
Ezek 43:27 :.....burnt offering and peace offering to be done on the 8th day of the month
