I was walking to the Suva bus stand after work two days ago and what caught my eye was the amount of mother's breastfeeding. It wasn't the fact that they were breastfeeding that amazed me but that it was with a feeling of such abandonment. They were not bothered by what other people were thinking nor were the public intimidated by that act. Contrasting scenario was the incident that happened with an airline in the states that removed a mother from the plane that was to take-off. She was told that it was an indecent display of body parts......wait a minute!!!!

Human milk is the ideal nourishment for infants’ survival, growth and development. Exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life stimulates babies’ immune systems and protects them from diarrhoea and acute respiratory infections – two of the major causes of infant mortality in the developing world – and improves their responses to vaccination. Particularly in unhygienic conditions, however, breastmilk substitutes carry a high risk of infection and can be fatal in infants. Yet only slightly more than one third of all infants in developing countries are exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life.

kimuli thanks for the update. for someone who works with an organization who promotes breastfeeding, i am glad that we are doing a great job.

every expectent mother's, are being advised at every major hopsitals in fiji the importance of breastfeeding. to-date all 21 hospitals in fiji are declared baby friendly hospital initiative (bfhi). bfhi is an effort to ensure that all maternity facilities whether free standing or in a hospital, become centers of breastfeeding support. the improved survival rate of mothers and particularly children can be achieved through baby friendly hospital initiatives (bfhi) which recognise each mother’s right to make her decision based on full and accurate information about feeding options. breastfeeding is one of the proven and effective interventions for reducing maternal and new-born disability and mortality.

fiji became the first pacific island nation to archieve baby friendly initiative status for all its 21 hospitals.

So the breast feeding was happening at he Suva bus stand ? ok what do you suggest the mother should do ? the baby is screaming, kicking and crying her/his guts out wanting to have a feed , don't forget not all babies like drinking from the bottle. If that was me, I will look for a private place to breast feed and when I do [bytheway there are maternity bras ] for mothers who breast feed so you dont have to take out the whole package ! jus the tits and off you go . I remember in Overseas they provide rooms in every public convenience for mothers , and very clean ! the poor inocent little baby must have a feed, why should you care what people think ! and if their yeki minds travel elsewhere when you see mothers breast feeding they're sick ! and please mothers look for a quite little place and feed the baby, also wear something that can give easy excess for the dudu to come out! something with opening in the front will be jus rite. ask the council to provide mothers rooms at the bus stand !
